Whether a consolidation loan changes your credit depends on your lender, so ask how it reports the new loan to credit bureaus and whether it runs a credit check before you apply. This guide is about business debt, so the rules below come from the SBA’s 7(a) loan program and other business loan sources.
What does loan consolidation mean for a business?
It means using one new loan to pay off existing business debts. The SBA’s 7(a) loan page lists \”Refinancing current business debt\” among its uses, next to \”Short- and long-term working capital.\” The maximum 7(a) loan is $5 million.
The SBA’s 504 loan page is stricter. It allows consolidation only under the conditions in 13 CFR 120.882, and a 504 loan cannot pay for working capital or inventory. The maximum 504 loan is $5.5 million, and you can get one only through a Certified Development Company.
Microloans are the exception. The SBA’s microloan page says proceeds \”cannot be used to pay existing debts or to purchase real estate.\” Microloans go up to $50,000, and the average is about $13,000.
| SBA program | Maximum loan | Can it pay off existing debt? |
|---|---|---|
| 7(a) loan | $5 million | Yes, \”refinancing current business debt\” is listed as a use |
| 504 loan | $5.5 million | Only \”qualified debt\” under 13 CFR 120.882, and not working capital |
| Microloan | Up to $50,000 | Not for existing debts, per the SBA microloan page |
Figures from the SBA program pages, captured October 28, 2026.
Does a consolidation loan hurt your credit score?
The SBA’s 7(a) loan page does not show a credit score effect for borrowers who consolidate. The SBA’s underwriting text for 7(a) small loans, copied in SBA procedural notice 5000-876777, says a lender’s scoring model \”does not rely solely on consumer credit scores.\” That describes how the lender decides, not what happens to your score after you borrow.
So ask the lender three things before you apply: which credit reports it uses, whether it pulls your credit when you apply, and whether it reports the new loan to business or personal credit bureaus. Get the answers in writing.
Can I get a loan with bad credit?
SBA’s 7(a) loan page says the key eligibility factors are \”what the business does to receive its income, its credit history, and where the business operates.\” It adds that your lender helps you choose the loan type, and that you \”will always work directly with your lender and not with SBA.\”
For 7(a) small loans, the same SBA notice defines the debt service coverage ratio as operating cash flow divided by debt service, and debt service is the future principal and interest due on all business debt, including the new SBA loan. What does a merchant cash advance cost, and is it a loan?
A merchant cash advance (MCA) is commonly structured as sales-based financing. The FTC describes it this way: companies \”provide funds to businesses in exchange for a percentage of the businesses’ revenue,\” and \”typically, a merchant cash advance company will make daily withdrawals from the business’s bank account until the obligation has been met\” (FTC press release, January 2022).
Texas lawmakers have looked at this. A Texas Senate Research Center analysis of H.B. 700, engrossed May 22, 2025, says MCAs are \”structured as ‘sales-based financing’\” and are \”currently not disclosed as loans.\” The bill’s sponsor says that is why they fall outside regulatory oversight. H.B. 700 would add disclosure rules for these deals. Read the Texas bill analysis.
The New York Attorney General has asked a court to rule that Delta Bridge (Cloudfund) MCAs are illegal loans, and that lawsuit is ongoing. In its Yellowstone settlement page, updated April 16, 2026, the AG says the lawsuit alleged Yellowstone \”was providing loans rather than MCAs.\” The settlement canceled all merchant debts to Yellowstone, totaling $534 million, and it applies only to Yellowstone MCAs.

What scam cases should you know about?
The FTC has brought several cases in this market. These three show the patterns to watch for.
| Case | Date | What the FTC or court says |
|---|---|---|
| RAM Capital Funding and Tzvi Reich | January 2022 | Banned from the MCA and debt collection industries and ordered to pay $675,000. The FTC alleged personal guarantees and upfront fees were demanded after the defendants said they would not ask for them. |
| Jonathan Braun, RCG Advances | February 2024 | Court entered a $20.3 million judgment after a jury found he knowingly violated the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act. The judgment included $3,421,067 in redress and $16,956,000 in civil penalties. |
| Seek Capital and Roy Ferman | November 2025 | Permanently banned from business financing, debt relief and credit repair. The court found they misrepresented that using their services \”will not harm customers’ credit scores.\” The final order was entered October 1, 2025. |
The Seek Capital case is the one most tied to credit harm, since the FTC alleged the company’s charges harmed clients’ credit scores. Read more in our debt settlement and credit repair scams guide. For more on this market, browse Business Finance and Industry Markets.
What are small businesses paying to borrow right now?
The Federal Reserve’s 2026 Report on Employer Firms, based on the 2025 Small Business Credit Survey, found that 38% of firms applied for a loan, line of credit, or merchant cash advance in the prior 12 months. Of those applicants, 42% received the full amount they sought, 36% received some or most, and 22% received none.
The same survey found that 59% of firms with debt used a personal guarantee to secure it, and 51% used business assets. Among firms that borrowed from online lenders, 60% reported higher-than-expected borrowing costs. The survey notes that it \”is not a random sample,\” so treat these figures as a snapshot.
The Fed’s H.15 release describes prime as \”one of several base rates used by banks to price short-term business loans.\” Check the current H.15 release for today’s prime rate.

What does SBA charge on a 7(a) or 504 loan?
The SBA’s FY 2027 information notice for 7(a) loans, effective through October 1, 2027, sets these upfront fees. Captured October 28, 2026.
| Loan size or term | Upfront guaranty fee |
|---|---|
| $150,000 or less | 2% of the guaranteed portion (lender keeps at most 25%) |
| $150,001 to $700,000 | 3% of the guaranteed portion |
| $700,001 to $5,000,000 | 3.5% of the guaranteed portion up to $1,000,000, plus 3.75% above $1,000,000 |
| Maturity of 12 months or less | 0.25% of the guaranteed portion |
For 504 loans approved October 1, 2026 through September 30, 2027, the SBA’s 504 fee notice sets an upfront guaranty fee of 0.50% and an annual service fee of 0.203% of the outstanding balance.
Before you sign: a short checklist
- Ask for the total payback in dollars and the factor rate on any merchant cash advance.
- Ask whether a personal guarantee is required. 59% of firms with debt used one, according to the Fed survey.
- Check whether the contract includes a confession of judgment clause. The FTC’s Braun complaint alleged these were used to seize assets.
- Ask how payments are collected. MCA payments are typically daily withdrawals, according to the FTC.
- Ask the lender whether it reports the loan to credit bureaus, and get the answer in writing.
- Confirm any \”no credit check\” or \”guaranteed\” language against the signed contract.
