The Amex business line of credit is a credit line from American Express for business use. American Express sets its own limit, rate, requirements, credit reporting and hard-pull rules, so get those directly from the company before you apply. Below, the published SBA and Federal Reserve figures show the range of business credit available, and each section tells you what to ask American Express.
How much does the Amex business line of credit give you?
American Express sets the limit for your business, so ask for it in writing as part of your application. For scale, these are the largest amounts in SBA programs that offer business credit, as shown on SBA’s own pages as of October 28, 2026.
| Program | Largest amount | What the SBA page says |
|---|---|---|
| 7(a) loan | $5 million | SBA’s primary business loan program; can fund short- and long-term working capital |
| 7(a) Working Capital Pilot line | $5,000,000 maximum loan amount | Monitored lines of credit within the 7(a) program |
| 504 loan | $5.5 million | Long-term, fixed-rate financing for major fixed assets |
| Microloan | Up to $50,000 (average about $13,000) | Provided through SBA funding intermediaries |
Each program has its own rules, so a larger ceiling does not mean you will get it. The SBA’s 7(a) loans page lists the eligibility factors that decide it.
How hard is it to get a $1,000,000 business loan?
A $1,000,000 loan sits within the SBA 7(a) maximum of $5 million, but the limit is not the hard part. The SBA’s 7(a) loans page says key eligibility factors are what the business does to receive its income, its credit history, and where the business operates. Businesses must also be creditworthy and show a reasonable ability to repay.
The Federal Reserve’s 2026 Report on Employer Firms, drawn from the 2025 Small Business Credit Survey (fielded September 3 to November 14, 2025), shows how applicants fare. Of firms that applied for financing in the prior 12 months, 42% received the full amount they sought, 36% received some or most, and 22% received none. Applicants at small banks were more likely to be fully approved (57%) than those that sought financing from other lenders. The survey is a convenience sample rather than a random one, so read these shares as a snapshot.
How do I qualify for a business line of credit?
American Express sets its own requirements, so ask for them before you apply. For SBA-backed credit, the SBA’s 7(a) loans page lists what a business must be to be eligible:
- An operating business that operates for profit
- Located in the U.S. and small under SBA size requirements
- Not a type of ineligible business
- Unable to get the desired credit on reasonable terms from sources other than federal, state or local government
- Creditworthy, with a reasonable ability to repay the loan
The SBA’s Working Capital Pilot line is aimed at businesses with at least one year of operating history that can produce timely and accurate financial statements, accounts receivable and accounts payable agings, and inventory reports. The SBA lists industries such as manufacturing, wholesale and professional services. For a side-by-side look at the two structures, read the working capital loans vs lines of credit guide.
Does Amex report business credit to personal credit?
Ask American Express how it reports your business line to personal credit files, and get the answer in writing. Personal guarantees are common in business borrowing. The Federal Reserve survey found that of firms with debt, 59% used a personal guarantee to secure their debt, while 51% used business assets. Ask which one your agreement requires before you sign.
Is an Amex business line of credit a hard pull?
Ask American Express directly whether applying triggers a hard credit inquiry, and whether it can run a pre-approval check first. The answer comes from American Express, so check it with the company rather than relying on an ad or a forum post.
Is a business line of credit better than a loan?
That depends on what the money is for, and you and your lender are the ones who can work it out. The SBA’s 7(a) program can fund short- and long-term working capital, and its Working Capital Pilot offers monitored lines of credit of up to $5 million. For term loans, the SBA says most 7(a) loans are repaid with monthly payments of principal and interest from the business’s cash flow. Fixed-rate payments stay the same because the interest rate is constant. For variable-rate loans, the lender may require a different payment when the interest rate changes.
What is the monthly payment on a $50,000 business loan?
A payment depends on the rate, the term and whether the rate can change, so the loan amount alone cannot give you a number. These published figures frame it:
| Working Capital Pilot loan amount | Interest rate limit (per SBA) |
|---|---|
| $50,000 or less | Cannot exceed base rate +6.5% |
| $50,001 to $250,000 | Cannot exceed base rate +6.0% |
| $250,001 to $350,000 | Cannot exceed base rate +4.5% |
| $350,001 and greater | Cannot exceed base rate +3.0% |
- SBA microloans go up to $50,000, with a maximum repayment term of seven years. Interest rates vary by intermediary lender and are generally between 8% and 13%, according to the SBA’s microloans page.
- The National Federation of Independent Business’s September 2026 report puts the average interest rate on short-maturity loans at 8.2% in September, up 0.7 points from August.
Ask any lender for a payment schedule on $50,000 at the rate and term offered, in writing, before you sign.
What is the interest rate on the Amex line?
American Express sets its rate, so check the current figure with the company before you apply. For context, the Federal Open Market Committee’s October 28, 2026 statement kept the target range for the federal funds rate at 3-3/4 to 4 percent. The Federal Reserve’s H.15 release notes that prime is one of several base rates banks use to price short-term business loans.
How long do you have to pay back a business line of credit?
American Express sets the term for its line, so ask for it directly. Published SBA maximums give a sense of the range: the Working Capital Pilot’s maximum loan maturity is 60 months, and an SBA microloan has a maximum repayment term of seven years. The term affects your payment, so ask for it together with the rate.
What are the downsides of a line of credit?
- Payments can change. For variable-rate SBA loans, the lender may require a different payment when the interest rate changes, according to the SBA’s 7(a) loans page.
- Costs can run higher than expected. In the Federal Reserve survey, 60% of firms that borrowed from online lenders said actual borrowing costs were higher than expected, and 4% said lower. The share reporting higher-than-expected costs was 37% at small banks and 32% at large banks. High interest rates and unfavorable repayment terms were the most common challenges at online lenders.
- Rates have been rising. The NFIB’s September 2026 report says a net 8% of owners reported paying a higher interest rate on their most recent loan, up 4 points from August and the highest level since June 2025.
Credit union and bank applicants were more satisfied with their experiences than online lender and finance company applicants, according to the Federal Reserve survey. The revenue-based financing vs traditional business loans guide compares how those funding structures work.
What is a merchant cash advance, and how is it different?
You may see a merchant cash advance (MCA) offered alongside a line of credit. The FTC describes merchant cash advance companies as providing funds to businesses in exchange for a percentage of the businesses’ revenue, and typically making daily withdrawals from the business’s bank account until the obligation has been met, according to its January 2022 press release. A Texas Senate Research Center analysis of H.B. 700, dated May 22, 2025, says MCAs are commonly structured as “sales-based financing” and are “currently not disclosed as loans.” Ask any MCA provider for the factor rate and the total payback in dollars, in writing, before you sign.
What are the risks with merchant cash advances?
Enforcement actions show what can go wrong. In February 2024 the FTC announced a $20.3 million judgment against an MCA operator after a jury found he deceived small businesses about how much funding they would receive and collect, according to the FTC’s February 2024 press release. The New York Attorney General’s Yellowstone settlement page, last updated April 16, 2026, says the lawsuit alleges that Yellowstone was providing loans rather than MCAs, and that its interest rates were much higher than state law allows. The settlement cancelled all merchant debts to Yellowstone, totaling $534 million.
How do I avoid a broker who charges upfront fees?
The FTC’s November 2025 announcement describes Seek Capital, a firm that targeted owners looking for loans or lines of credit. A federal court found the company misrepresented that it had relationships with lenders and that it charged no fees until the customer received funding. The final order permanently bans Seek Capital and its CEO from marketing business financing. Before you pay anyone for access to credit, confirm who the lender is and read the fee terms. The SBA states that for 7(a) loans, “You will always work directly with your lender and not with SBA.” The small-business contract scams checklist covers the paperwork to check.
Can I apply for a business line of credit myself?
For SBA loans, you apply directly through a local lender, and the SBA’s Lender Match tool can match you with a participating SBA lender. SBA District Offices can help in person, online or by telephone, and SBA Resource Partners also help small businesses. For an Amex line, the application runs through American Express.
The rules behind business lending
- The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau issued a final rule on May 1, 2026, revising its small business lending data rule under section 1071 of the Dodd-Frank Act. The compliance date is extended to January 1, 2028, as stated on the CFPB’s 1071 rule page, as of October 31, 2026. The rule’s Regulation B version was published in the Federal Register on May 31, 2023.
- SBA Standard Operating Procedure 50 10 8.1 takes effect October 1, 2026, for applications that receive an SBA loan number on or after that date, according to the SBA information notice.
- Texas H.B. 700 addresses disclosures for commercial sales-based financing transactions, as described in the May 22, 2025 bill analysis linked above.
