Trump’s Roy Cooper Prison-Release Claims: What the Truth Social Post Says

posted on October 12, 2026

Last updated 14 October 2026

President Donald Trump accused former North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper of releasing prisoners during the COVID period and endorsed Republican Michael Whatley for the U.S. Senate. The October 11 Truth Social post is a campaign statement, not a new federal policy or an executive order.

What did Trump say about Roy Cooper?

In his Truth Social post, President Trump wrote that Cooper “let out 83 murderers from prisons and penitentiaries around the State,” including 51 people serving life sentences. He said 25 of those released later committed murders.

The President also named DeCarlos Brown, Jr. in the post and connected the case to his criticism of Cooper. Those are the President’s claims in the statement. The post itself does not announce a federal investigation, a court action, or a change in prison policy.

What action did Trump take?

The concrete action in the post was a political endorsement. President Trump urged North Carolina voters to support Michael Whatley for the U.S. Senate and said Whatley has his “complete and total endorsement.”

That makes this part of the North Carolina Senate campaign, not a White House policy rollout. Readers tracking other presidential statements can also see Trump’s October 7 statement.

Who is running in North Carolina?

Ballotpedia’s Roy Cooper profile lists Cooper as the Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate and Whatley as the Republican candidate. It lists the general election for November 3, 2026.

Cooper served as North Carolina governor from 2017 through 2025, according to Ballotpedia. The Senate race will be decided by voters, and campaign statements from either side do not change that election timetable.

What is still pending?

No new law, executive action, or federal prison directive appears in the President’s post. Any criminal case, state-record finding, or prison-policy dispute would depend on the relevant court and state records, not on the endorsement itself.

The immediate choice for voters is political: weigh the candidates’ records and claims before November 3. For another recent Trump post centered on campaign claims, see Trump’s Letitia James claims.
