  • That a named lab performed a named test on a specific date. A COA documents who tested what, when, and how, which supports traceability.

What a COA Cannot Prove

  • That every unit in every bottle matches the tested batch. A COA reflects a sample from one lot. It does not test every unit produced, and it says nothing about lots made before or after the one tested.
  • That the product is safe or effective for any individual. A COA is a quality and composition document, not a clinical safety or efficacy study. It does not evaluate how a product interacts with any person’s health conditions or medications.
  • That nothing untested is present. A COA only reports on what the lab was asked to test for. A substance that wasn’t included in the testing panel won’t show up, whether or not it’s present.
  • That the lab is qualified or the results are accurate, just because a COA exists. Not all labs are accredited to the same standard, and not all COAs disclose their testing methodology. A document alone doesn’t establish reliability.
  • Long-term storage stability. A COA reflects the sample at the time of testing — it doesn’t guarantee that potency or purity hold steady through the product’s full shelf life.

  • Check the lab’s accreditation. Look for a testing lab accredited to ISO/IEC 17025, the accreditation standard commonly required by marketplaces and industry buyers for supplement testing labs. An accreditation number you can independently verify is a stronger signal than a lab name alone.
  • Match the batch or lot number. Confirm the lot number on the COA matches the lot number printed on the product you actually have. A COA for a different batch tells you nothing about the one in your hands.
  • Look for a stated test method. A credible COA names the analytical method used (such as HPLC or ICP-MS) rather than just listing a result with no context.
  • Check the test date. Older COAs may not reflect current formulation, sourcing, or manufacturing changes.
  • See what was — and wasn’t — tested. Review the full panel. A COA that only checks potency, with no contaminant screening, tells a different story than a full-panel COA.
  • Look for pass/fail against a stated specification. Numbers without a comparison point (a target range or limit) are harder to interpret.

Limitations and Who Should Be Cautious

A COA is a snapshot, not a guarantee. Anyone relying on a COA to make a purchasing or health-related decision should treat it as one piece of information among several, not a substitute for professional guidance.

People managing chronic health conditions, taking prescription medications, pregnant or breastfeeding, or considering a product for a child should talk with a physician or pharmacist before use, regardless of what a COA shows. A COA cannot evaluate individual risk, and it does not replace that conversation.

Consumers should also be aware that COA-related problems have shown up in FDA enforcement actions. Warning letters have cited manufacturers for relying on supplier COAs without properly qualifying the supplier’s results, and for using test methods that could not actually confirm the identity or composition of the finished product. A COA’s presence is not proof of its accuracy.

Possible Interactions and Considerations

Because a COA does not evaluate how a product’s ingredients may interact with medications, supplements, or existing health conditions, that responsibility falls on the consumer and their healthcare provider. Anyone currently taking prescription medication, especially blood thinners, thyroid medication, or drugs with a narrow safety margin, should ask a pharmacist about potential interactions before starting a new supplement — a COA will not surface this information.
