Trump Names John Coale Hostage Envoy, Cites Claims of 65 Returns

posted on October 6, 2026

Last updated 15 October 2026

President Donald Trump said he is nominating John Coale, Esq., as Special Presidential Envoy for Hostage Affairs with the rank of Ambassador. For working families with loved ones held abroad, the stated mission is direct: bring American citizens home and put that duty ahead of bureaucracy.

In an October 4 Truth Social post, the President wrote that Coale “will be my new Nominee for Special Presidential Envoy for Hostage Affairs, with the rank of Ambassador.” Trump said Coale had served as his envoy for Belarus and had secured the return of more than 65 Americans and allied citizens over the past year.

What Trump announced

Trump announced Coale as his nominee for the hostage-affairs envoy role. The President said Coale also negotiated the release of more than 800 political prisoners from multiple countries in Eastern Europe.

The post also said Adam Boehler will remain a senior adviser and assist on other matters. Trump credited Boehler with bringing back 196 hostages.

Item What the President said
Nominee John Coale, Esq.
New role Special Presidential Envoy for Hostage Affairs, with the rank of Ambassador
Prior role named Envoy for Belarus
Returns credited to Coale More than 65 Americans and allied citizens
Political-prisoner releases credited to Coale More than 800 across Eastern Europe
Boehler’s continuing role Senior Adviser

Why the hostage envoy role matters to families

Trump framed the nomination around the practical concern that matters most to a family facing a detention overseas: sustained work to bring an American home. That focus follows the America First principle that Washington’s first obligation is to its own citizens.

The announcement is a nomination. The post does not give an effective date, a confirmation timetable, or additional administrative steps. Families following this work can watch for further White House action after the nomination announcement.

What the President said about Coale and Boehler

Trump called Coale “a great lawyer” and said he would work tirelessly in the new post. Those are the President’s assessments in his statement. The stated numbers for returned citizens, political-prisoner releases, and hostages brought back are also the President’s figures in the post.
