To get a holiday loan, you apply with a lender and get a firm offer before you accept, so compare the APR and the total you will repay first. Start with a credit union you already belong to: federal credit unions are generally capped at 15% APR on loans, while payday loans can run near 400% APR.

How do I get a holiday loan?
AA Credit Union directs applicants to log into online banking to apply for its holiday loan. AA Credit Union’s holiday loan page lists three steps: log into online banking, select “Apply Now” and then “Holiday Loan,” and watch your email for updates. You can also apply by phone at (800) 533-0035 or in a branch. The page says the offer is open to members in good standing, and that all loans are subject to final review and approval. AA Credit Union holiday loan lists a $1,500 limit and a 16.00% APR, with applications accepted from 10/14/2026 to 01/15/2027 and funding required by 01/31/2027. Those figures were shown on October 28, 2026.
Alliance Catholic Credit Union’s Christmas loan works the same way. The page says you must be at least 18, be a member in good standing, and hold one Christmas loan per account. It lists borrowing up to $4,000 on a 12-month term, and an offer that expires 12/31/2026. Alliance Catholic Credit Union Christmas loan is the page to read for current rates.
Holiday loan cost comparison: which option costs the least?
Rates and fees depend on your credit and your lender. The table shows selected published terms from each source. It is not a ranking of cost across all lenders. Check the rate on the offer you actually receive.
| Option | Rate or cost the sources show | Dollar example | Fits you if |
|---|---|---|---|
| Credit union holiday loan | 16.00% APR, up to $1,500, up to 12 months (AA Credit Union, shown October 28, 2026) | Using AA Credit Union’s approximate $136.06 monthly-payment example, 12 payments would be about $1,632.72. | You belong to the credit union and have steady income |
| Credit union Christmas loan | “As low as 9.99% APR” for qualifying credit, up to $4,000, 12-month term, offer through 12/31/2026 (Alliance Catholic Credit Union) | $1,000 at $87.92 a month for 12 months = $1,055.04 repaid, which is $55.04 more than you borrowed | You belong to the credit union and qualify for its rate |
| PALs II loan from a federal credit union | Up to $2,000, one to 12 months, no rollovers (NCUA, September 19, 2019). Ask the credit union for the APR and any fee. | Ask for the total repaid before you sign | You are a federal credit union member or can join one |
| Credit card purchase | APRs of about 12% to about 30% (Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, last reviewed May 28, 2024) | Check your card statement and cardholder agreement for the APR, fees, and how interest is calculated. | You can pay the balance on time |
| Installment loan through a loan-matching site | APR 5.99% to 35.99% for qualified customers, 61 days to 72 months (TribalLoans.com and ChristmasLoans.us, captured October 28, 2026) | The TribalLoans.com example shows $2,500 at $140.84 a month. Ask for the term and total repaid. | You qualify for a low rate and have the term in writing |
| Buy now, pay later | “Typically interest-free,” per LendingTree’s 2026 Buy Now, Pay Later Report. | No interest figure is listed. 47% of BNPL users said they paid late in the past year. | One purchase you can repay on schedule |
| Payday loan | Typical two-week fee of $15 per $100, which equals almost 400% APR (CFPB, last reviewed May 28, 2024). Many state laws set maximum fees ranging from $10 to $30 per $100. | $500 borrowed, $75 fee, $575 due on your next payday | Only if you can repay the full amount on the due date |
| Tribal online loan | In the Third Circuit case summarized by Orrick, rates were as high as 700% (Orrick summary, September 5, 2025) | $600 at 636% owed $2,400 over about 10 months, according to the Fourth Circuit’s Hengle decision | Rarely a fit. Check your state’s cap first. |
How the dollar examples work
Using the listed approximate $136.06 payment, 12 payments would total about $1,632.72, or about $132.72 above the amount borrowed.
Christmas loan: $87.92 for each $1,000 financed, times 12 months, is $1,055.04. Subtract $1,000, and the cost is $55.04. That payment comes from the credit union’s printed figure, so your own rate may differ.
Payday loan: $500 at the typical $15 per $100 is a $75 fee. Add the fee to the $500 and you owe $575 on your next payday. If you roll the loan over, you pay the fee again and the $500 stays owed. Four fees of $75 total $300. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau describes rollovers as letting you “pay only the fees” when a state allows them.
Which holiday loan fits your situation?
You have a steady paycheck
A fixed monthly payment is easier to plan around. The credit union loans above show one: $136.06 a month on $1,500 over 12 months. Compare that payment with what you have left after bills before you apply.
Your income changes from month to month
A payday loan is usually repaid in a single payment on your next payday, and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s payday loan explainer notes that payday lenders generally do not verify your ability to repay. If your pay comes in uneven amounts, one large payment can land in a short month. Look for a loan with several monthly payments instead, such as a PALs II loan, which can run one to 12 months.
You belong to a credit union
Start there. Ask whether you qualify for its holiday loan or a PALs II loan, and ask for the APR and total repaid in writing. The National Credit Union Administration generally limits federal credit union loans to a 15% rate ceiling. Its NCUA interest rate ceiling announcement of February 6, 2026 extended a temporary 18% ceiling to September 10, 2027.
You have a 401(k)
Withdrawing retirement money early has a cost. The IRS says most retirement plan distributions are subject to income tax and may be subject to an additional 10% tax. Its IRS page on early distributions lists the exceptions. Ask your plan administrator what your plan allows before you take money out.
You are already behind on credit cards
A new loan adds another payment. Before you borrow, list every payment you owe and its due date. The Federal Trade Commission says nonprofit credit counseling is available in every state and often is free or low cost. Ask a counselor to review your payments with you.
If the money is for a business expense rather than household bills, compare the structures in our guide to working capital loans vs lines of credit.
What if the offer is tied to your tax refund?
If an offer is tied to a tax return you expect to file, ask the preparer for the total fee in dollars and the total you will owe before you agree. Compare that with the rows in the table above.
Payday, tribal and matching-site loans: what to check
Payday loans are generally for $500 or less, and many are due on your next payday, two to four weeks after you borrow. The Center for Responsible Lending, an advocacy group, cites research from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau showing that four out of five payday loans are reborrowed within two weeks. Its Rhode Island rate cap release dated July 9, 2025 counted 21 states plus D.C. with strong interest rate caps. Rhode Island’s 36% cap takes effect January 1, 2027.
Online tribal loans can be a different case. In an August 4, 2025 decision summarized in September 2025, the Third Circuit ruled that an online lender owned by a federally recognized tribe was not protected by tribal sovereign immunity. The loans in that case carried annual interest rates as high as 700%. Read the Orrick summary of the Third Circuit ruling for the details.
TribalLoans.com says it is a matching service, not a lender, and that it does not make loans. ChristmasLoans.us says it is not a lender and pairs you with third-party lenders. Both disclose the same APR range of 5.99% to 35.99% for qualified customers, with terms from 61 days to 72 months. Ask which lender you would actually borrow from, and get that lender’s terms in writing.
Buy now, pay later and card cash advances
LendingTree’s 2026 Buy Now, Pay Later Report says 47% of BNPL users paid late on a loan in the past year, up from 41% in 2025 and 34% in 2024. It also says 54% of users agree they need BNPL loans to make ends meet. A separate survey fielded in October 2026 found that BNPL lenders are highly likely to waive a late fee if you ask. Its LendingTree holiday debt study, published December 22, 2025, found 40% of holiday debtors pay interest rates of 20.00% or more.
Your state’s rules decide what is available
Availability, rate caps and lending rules differ by state. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau says some states do not allow payday lending, and in states that do, you can get more information from your state regulator or state attorney general. Active-duty servicemembers have federal protections: the Military Lending Act caps the Military Annual Percentage Rate at 36%, per the Bureau. Contact your state regulator with questions about your own loan.
How do I spot a holiday loan scam?
The Federal Trade Commission warns that scammers promise a loan regardless of your credit history, then ask for a fee first. Any up-front fee the lender wants before it grants the loan is a cue to walk away, especially if it is called “insurance,” “processing” or “paperwork.” Be careful of ads that say “guaranteed approval,” “instant approval” or “no credit check.” The FTC’s FTC guide to advance-fee loans says legitimate lenders won’t promise or guarantee a loan before you apply, and they check your credit report before deciding.
Check that the lender is registered in your state. The FTC advises contacting your state attorney general or banking regulator. Scams take other forms too, so our guide to student loan scams shows how to verify an offer before you pay anything.
Holiday loan questions
Is there a best holiday loan?
No single loan is best for everyone. The cheapest one is the one you qualify for at the lowest total repaid, so compare the APR and total repaid from each lender in writing.
Where can I get money right away?
Ask each lender when funds arrive after approval, and check the offer’s funding deadline. AA Credit Union’s offer requires funding by 01/31/2027.
Can I take out a holiday loan on a Saturday?
The credit union pages above describe online applications. Ask the lender whether it funds loans on weekends before you plan around it.
Are holiday loans for bad credit available?
Alliance says its advertised rate is based on your credit bureau score, and AA says its rates may vary with creditworthiness. NCUA Chairman Rodney Hood said the PALs II rule can help borrowers “build or repair credit records” (NCUA, September 19, 2019).
