[BREAKING] Trump Pushes Senate to Pass Sunshine Protection Act — Permanent DST Is Finally Within Reach

posted on August 4, 2026

For decades, twice a year like clockwork, Americans have grumbled, groaned, and lost sleep — literally — over the absurd ritual of changing their clocks. Spring forward. Fall back. Repeat until the end of time. Well, President Donald J. Trump has had enough, and more importantly, so has the American people. On Tuesday, Trump took to Truth Social to announce a major milestone: the House of Representatives has passed the Sunshine Protection Act, and he is now calling on Republican senators to clear their holds and send it to his desk for signature. This is the moment we’ve been waiting for, and the Senate needs to stop dragging its feet.

A Common-Sense Win That Washington Has Failed to Deliver — Until Now

Let’s be honest: permanent Daylight Saving Time is one of those rare issues where virtually everyone agrees. Polls have consistently shown that a strong majority of Americans — across party lines — want to stop the biannual clock-changing madness. Republicans, Democrats, Independents — it doesn’t matter. Nobody wakes up the Monday after losing an hour of sleep and thinks, “Wow, I’m so glad we still do this.”

And yet, Washington being Washington, nothing ever got done. The Senate actually passed a version of the Sunshine Protection Act back in 2022 by unanimous consent, only to watch it die quietly in the House. Then the issue stalled again in subsequent sessions. Bureaucratic inertia, competing priorities, and the kind of do-nothing gridlock that has defined the D.C. establishment for generations kept one of the most widely supported policy changes in modern history stuck in neutral.

That changes now. With the House having passed the bill and Trump putting his full political weight behind it, the Senate has no excuse. As Trump made crystal clear in his post: “I am asking Republican Senators to release their holds, and allow the hotline to clear on the Republican side. LET’S PASS THE SUNSHINE PROTECTION ACT, ASAP.” When the President speaks this directly, it’s time to listen.

The Science, the Safety, and the Savings Are All on America’s Side

This isn’t just about convenience — though convenience alone would be reason enough. The case for permanent Daylight Saving Time is backed by a growing body of medical, economic, and public safety research that makes the argument overwhelming.

Consider what Trump outlined in his Truth Social post. Leading studies have linked the elimination of the biannual time change to a wide range of benefits, including:

  • Reduced violent crime — More daylight in the evening hours has been associated with lower rates of robbery and even murder, as criminals favor darkness for cover.
  • Fewer traffic accidents — Pedestrian fatalities spike in the days following the fall-back change, when commuters suddenly face darker evening roads. An extra hour of evening light saves lives.
  • Better cardiovascular health — Research has shown measurable upticks in heart attacks and strokes in the days immediately following the spring time change, when sleep disruption stresses the body.
  • Lower rates of seasonal depression — More usable daylight in the evening hours has a documented positive impact on mental health, particularly during fall and winter months.
  • Safer afternoons for kids — Children walking home from school in darkness is a preventable danger. More evening light keeps them safer, period.
  • Economic boosts across multiple sectors — Industries from retail to restaurants to tourism and fitness all benefit when Americans have more usable daylight after work. People shop more, dine out more, and stay active longer.
  • Real cost savings — As Trump noted, for cities and states that maintain watchtowers and service hard-to-reach infrastructure, the twice-yearly time adjustment costs millions. That’s taxpayer money being burned for zero benefit.

These aren’t talking points dreamed up in a campaign war room. They reflect a genuine and growing scientific consensus that the current system of changing clocks twice a year is an artifact of a different era — one that no longer serves the American people.

The Senate Must Act — No More Excuses

The political conditions for passing this bill have never been better. You have a President who is publicly, loudly, and enthusiastically demanding it. You have a House that has already delivered. You have bipartisan public support that most legislation can only dream of. And you have a mountain of evidence showing that making Daylight Saving Time permanent is good for American health, safety, wallets, and quality of life.

So what’s the holdup? A small number of Republican senators have placed procedural holds on the bill, preventing it from moving through the chamber via the hotline process — a streamlined mechanism for passing broadly supported legislation. Trump has called them out directly, and rightly so. This is not the moment for procedural games or personal vendettas. This is a moment to deliver a real, tangible win for the American people.

The legacy media won’t give Trump credit for this. They never do. But the reality is that this White House has pushed through the finish line something that multiple administrations — Republican and Democrat alike — talked about and never delivered. That’s the Trump difference. That’s what it looks like when a president actually fights for the things Americans care about, not just the things that excite the donor class.

Bottom Line

The Sunshine Protection Act is common sense wrapped in legislation. It will make Americans healthier, safer, and more prosperous — and it will stop the government from forcing every man, woman, and child in this country to lose an hour of sleep twice a year for no good reason. President Trump has done his job. The House has done its job. Now it’s time for the Senate to do its job. Release the holds, clear the hotline, and pass the Sunshine Protection Act. The American people have been waiting long enough. For more on the Trump agenda moving through Congress, visit our Politics section.
