Trump Backs Permanent Daylight Saving Time — And the Science Is On His Side

posted on July 22, 2026

Leave it to President Donald Trump to cut through decades of bureaucratic inertia and ask the question millions of Americans have been asking every time they groggily reset their clocks twice a year: why are we still doing this? On Tuesday, Trump took to Truth Social to share an eye-opening piece from the New York Post laying out the health benefits of permanent daylight saving time — and if Washington had any sense left, lawmakers would be sprinting to make it happen.

This isn’t a fringe idea. This isn’t a culture war distraction. This is common sense reform that the American people have wanted for years, and the science increasingly backs it up. The only thing standing in the way is the usual Washington combination of bureaucratic stubbornness and political cowardice.

The Clock-Changing Chaos Is Hurting Americans

Let’s be honest about what happens every time the United States “falls back” or “springs forward.” Productivity tanks. Accident rates spike. People walk around like zombies for days. Doctors and sleep researchers have long warned that the biannual clock shift disrupts the body’s circadian rhythm — the internal biological clock that governs sleep, hormone levels, metabolism, and mood.

Studies have repeatedly shown that in the days following the springtime shift to daylight saving time, there are measurable upticks in heart attacks, strokes, and workplace injuries. Car accidents increase. Hospital visits go up. This isn’t speculation — this is documented, peer-reviewed science that the legacy media largely ignores because it doesn’t fit whatever narrative they’re pushing on any given week.

Meanwhile, the argument for keeping the clock-changing system — originally rooted in old agricultural and wartime energy-saving rationales — has largely collapsed under modern scrutiny. The energy savings, once touted as the big justification, have proven to be minimal at best and negligible at worst in an era of modern lighting and climate-controlled buildings.

So why are we still doing it? Ask your senator. Ask your congressman. Because it certainly isn’t for the benefit of the American people.

Permanent DST: More Light, Better Lives

The case for permanent daylight saving time — as opposed to permanent standard time — centers on what Americans actually want out of their daily lives. More usable daylight in the evening hours means more time outdoors after work, more physical activity, more time for families to gather and be active together. Public health experts have linked increased evening daylight to reductions in seasonal depression, greater physical fitness, and even lower rates of certain crimes that spike after dark.

Think about it from a purely practical standpoint:

  • Children and families benefit from lighter evenings that allow for outdoor play and activity after school hours.
  • Small businesses — restaurants, retail, recreational services — see real economic boosts when people are more inclined to be out and about in the light.
  • Mental health improves when Americans aren’t robbed of their evening daylight during the long winter months.
  • Commuters and workers experience fewer disruptions to their sleep schedules when the clock stays fixed year-round.

The American Academy of Sleep Medicine has previously weighed in on the clock-change debate, and the broader medical consensus has been moving toward eliminating the twice-yearly switch altogether. Where experts debate is which permanent time to adopt — but the chaos of the current system is something virtually everyone agrees needs to end.

It’s worth noting that the U.S. Senate actually passed the Sunshine Protection Act unanimously back in 2022 — a bill that would have made daylight saving time permanent nationwide. It died in the House. Classic Washington: the people want something, the Senate actually does something about it, and then the House lets it rot. Meanwhile, Americans kept resetting their clocks and wondering why nothing ever gets done.

Trump Is Listening to the American People — As Usual

What President Trump’s Truth Social post signals is something his supporters already know: he pays attention to what real Americans care about. This isn’t a think-tank priority or a donor-class obsession. This is kitchen-table stuff. This is the kind of thing Americans complain about every March and November without fail. And while the Washington establishment was too busy with its usual games to deliver a simple quality-of-life fix, Trump is once again putting the issue front and center.

This is exactly the kind of America-first, common-sense governance that the Trump movement has always been about. You don’t need a massive government program or a trillion-dollar spending bill to improve the daily lives of the American people. Sometimes you just need the political will to fix something that’s broken — and the courage to actually do it.

The globalist bureaucrats and the legacy media elites will never understand why Trump connects with ordinary Americans the way he does. It’s because he actually pays attention to their lives. Whether it’s energy costs, border security, or yes — the maddening ritual of changing the clocks twice a year — Trump sees what the people see.

Bottom Line

The era of clock-changing nonsense needs to end. The health case is real. The public support is overwhelming. The legislative groundwork has already been laid. All that’s needed now is the political will to get it done — and with President Trump drawing attention to the issue, there’s no better time to push Congress to finish what it started. Permanent daylight saving time is a win for American health, American families, and American common sense. Let’s make it happen.
